Mr. Benton Terrell Jones, SGT, USA, (Ret)

President/CEO/FD Apprentice # 4339

Benton Terrell Jones, SGT, USA, (Ret), the son of the late Jane E. Jones, Susan (Lenue) Hayes, and Ambrose (Linda) Johnson, is a native of Lake View, SC with close family ties to Nichols, Mullins and Dillon, SC. He is the husband of Raven Anthony Jones and the very proud father of Ke’sean, Lauryn and Landyn Jones.

The seed to become a mortician was planted in Benton before he was born. Since the age of 5 years old, the desire to become a mortician intensified. His mother would often sing at funeral services, and Benton would accompany her just to view and admire the workmanship of the bodies of the deceased and to see and speak with (late) Mr. William “Penn” Troy, owner of Troy’s Funeral Home, Mullins, SC. His mother would personally escort him to speak with Mr. Troy at every service. It was his childhood dream and desire to work for Mr. Troy. He was very intrigued by his style, professionalism and work etiquette. Benton was so intrigued that after each service, he couldn’t wait to go home to imitate Mr. Troy with his very own mock funeral service. He would use toy cars to form the funeral procession and would make makeshift graves adorn with roses from his grandmother Rosa Lee Thompson’s rose bushes. He would then sing, preach and perform the funeral service.

When he was in middle school, he created a portfolio of his business vision as a school project. One summer day in 2010 after much thought and prayer, he called around to the local funeral homes in the area to pursue a job in funeral operations and services. At the time, every funeral home called was fully staffed. When he called House of Thomas, he spoke to (late) Elder Kevin Thomas. Elder Thomas invited him to stop by and speak with him. Benton immediately jumped up, put on his Sunday best, grabbed his portfolio he made in middle school and headed to House of Thomas. When Elder Thomas opened the door, he was surprised to see Benton and told him, “I wasn’t expecting you to come by today, but since you’re here, come on in.” Benton showed Elder Thomas his portfolio made during his middle school years and he was completely shocked. Elder Thomas told Benton, “I usually don’t hire younger people, but I’m so impressed, I must give you a chance.” and he that did. From that point, Benton was privileged and honored to be mentored by the great Elder Kevin Thomas.

Upon graduating in 2011 from Lake View High School, Benton joined the United States Army and served over five years including an eleven-month tour in Djibouti, Africa. During his time of active duty, he earned numerous medals and awards including 2 Army Commendation Medals, 2 Army Achievement Medals, a Good Conduct Medal, a National Defense Service Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, an Army Service Ribbon and a Certificate of Achievement. He was also awarded six service coins. He medically retired from active duty in 2017. After retiring, Benton sought out to fulfill his lifelong dream as a funeral director and embalmer. His goal was to assist families as they seek to honor and celebrate their loved ones through highly customized and prestigious services. He began his apprenticeship with Foundation Partners Group LLC and Thompson Funeral Homes in Columbia, SC. At this location he was able to serve a diverse clientele and numerous faith groups and communities such as: Catholic, Lutheran, Episcopal, Methodist, Baptist, Jewish, Islamic, Hindu, Korean Presbyterian, Presbyterian, Law Enforcement, Veterans and Humanistic services.

While at Thompson Funeral Home, Benton was able to enhance his knowledge of funeral service, become a certified cremation specialist and received an Associate in Occupational Studies in Funeral Service from American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service in 2020. In 2018, he was featured in Columbia Living Magazine for his exemplary services serving the Columbia area while working for Thompson Funeral Home and in 2019, he was voted number one in the company at Foundation Partners Group LLC for customer satisfaction. Though he enjoyed caring for families in Columbia and surrounding areas, he is thrilled to come home to serve the Pee Dee and surrounding areas during their time of need. His later mentor, Elder Kevin Thomas was a visionary. He once told him, “When a man is given a vision, it should be shared so it will continue to live even if the visionary dies, the vision will never die.” Though Elder Thomas is no longer with us, Benton’s mission is to run with the vision.
