Obituary of Ms. Betty Johnson

We, the Prestige Funeral Home Staff, humbly announce the passing of Ms. Betty Johnson. The family is receiving friends at 5612 Quitman Trail, Raleigh, NC. Please remember her family in your prayers. Her Life Story: Betty Jean Johnson, affectionately known as “Betty the Beautiful” or “Bett” entered eternal rest at Wake Medical Center on September 12, 2023. She was born on August 22, 1957, to John Henry McNair and Mary Jane Johnson, of Dillon SC, who preceded her in death. She was a member of Mars Hill Bible Way Holiness church at a young age. She attended the Dillon County public school system and graduated from Dillon High School. Following the completion of high school, she moved to Raleigh to pursue a college degree. Betty graduated from Saint Augustine University with a science degree in Psychology. She also attended NC Central University to pursue a master’s degree. She gave her time so selflessly to her community by assisting young people with gaining skills and confidence to be successful in the journey of life by introducing them to community enrichment programs like Dare, Meld Young Moms and the 4H Club to name a few. She gave so much of her time that she won an award unanimously for her community service. Betty Jean was a woman of many talents. She was a seamstress, a singer, a community activist, but her most prized talent was cooking. She could make a mean pot of collard greens! She had a colorful personality that would light up any space she was in. You knew she was in the building because of her infectious laugh, especially when she told those corny jokes. She was truly the life of the party. She was pure joy. Anyone who knew her loved her. She instilled so many good values in people, like integrity, loyalty, patience and most of all love and forgiveness. She had a Godly way of forgiving that is not always understood. She loved God and had unshakeable faith. There was no question in her mind that God was always present. She didn’t just tell you what to do, it was shown. She was an angel on earth who would help anyone. She was a counselor. You could confide in her because she never told your secrets and comforted you if she felt something was wrong. She was a devoted mother to her children, biological or not. She adored her grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was especially close to her siblings Jimmy Lee Johnson of Dillon, SC and Mary Austin of Winston-Salem, NC. She was the epitome of black queendom and is sorely missed. She was preceded in death by parents, John Henry McNair and Mary Jane Johnson; her grandparents, Otto and Janie Johnson; her uncles, Otto Johnson, Jr. and Joseph Johnson; her aunts, Martha Smith, Elise Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson, Bertha Johnson, Beatrice Miller and Dorothy Crawford; her uncle, Robert Lee Johnson, and her great-grandson, Karter Deshon Johnson. She leaves to cherish her precious memories to her children, Adrienne Johnson, Sonja Johnson, Surena Johnson, Jacqueline Mack, Christina Johnson, Christopher Johnson and her bonus children, Ladone "Bell" Smith, Kendra Smith, Nikki Lassiter, Tiffany Lassiter and Durrell Lassiter all of Raleigh NC; her sister, Mary Austin of Winston Salem, NC; her little brother, Jimmy Lee Johnson; her grandchildren, Kendrick Johnson, De’Andre Walden, Sabrya Johnson, Precious Crowder, Samaiya Hooks, Nikaiya Hooks, Tamaijion Johnson, Jordan Smith, Chloe Johnson, Aniyah Green, Shiva Asha and Zoey Johnson; her great-grandchildren, Kyleigh Johnson, Kendi Johnson, Kimora Jean Johnson, Kamden Montague, Charlotte Burgess, Akilah Quick, Riley Walden and Emryn Quick; her bonus grandchildren, Jasmine Lassiter, Diamond Dunn, Chelsea Allen, and Aniyah McNeill. I want to give special acknowledgements to her devoted friends who were with her every step of the way; Diane Lewis, Virginia Blue, Hazel Denning and Lisa Robson Braswell and sister-cousins, Deloris Miller ,Diane Ayers and Sharon Hunter.
