Well, where do I begin? Uncle Gene, I have so many memories of you that will live within me forever. I remember as a child following you everywhere you went. You couldn't crank your truck up without me running to the door to ask if I could go with you. You'd often call asking me what I had to drink in the refrigerator. Then you'd say, "bring me a glass of kool-aid!" I'd jump up, wouldn't ask permission from anyone, and take you some kool-aid. When you'd get sick, Aunt Sue would cook and I couldn't rest until I took you something to eat and made sure you were okay. When we did venture off somewhere, that was our time to listen to our Quartet gospel. You'd sing lead and I'd back you up. My admiration for Quartet Music is because of you. You and I were both the biggest Lee Williams fans. We thought we was Lee and no one could tell us different. I can recall being at church and listening to you sing and would be so proud to call you my uncle. I wanted to be like you so much as a child because you were MY "Uncle Gene." If something was said about you that I didn't like, I'd be so upset. I also remember our trips to Trading Post. We went so much, they started thinking I was your son. When someone asked if I was your son, you'd say, "no, that's my woresome nephew." I'm going to miss you, Uncle Gene! The weird noises you'd make for no reason. The old school remedies you'd tell us that never worked. You showing up early to an event, walking in the door and asking someone to fix you something to drink. There will never be another you, Uncle Gene. You were my hero but most importantly, you were my friend. Your impact on my life has been greater than you'll ever know. "On My Way Home" was one of your favorite songs to sing. We will lay you to rest Thursday and though I don't want to, I'm going to sing it for you one final time and this time, you back me up. I love you always, Uncle Gene!
Your favorite line to me:
"Benton, fix me some kool-aid, I might give you a dollar later"
Sleep in Peace, Uncle Gene. I will take it from here!
